212 hotels joined Earth Hour 2016

NOZPD - Earth Hour

This year 212 Radisson Blu and Park Inn by Radisson hotels joined the thousands of households, businesses & landmarks across the globe to celebrate Earth Hour 2016. Each year our hotels turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness of the need to take action on climate change, which this year was with the slogan ‘shine a light on climate change’. The Radisson Blu and Park Inn by Radisson hotels used Earth Hour – an environmental initiative supported by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) – as an opportunity to engage guests, employees and business partners in their pursue for energy savings by organising fun activities. The majority of our hotels switched off their lights, served quirky Earth Hour cocktails & menus by candlelight.

“Each year more and more of our hotels and their teams participate in this global event. It is exciting to engage our guests in energy savings practices also. The Earth Hour message underlines the support of Think Planet, Rezidor’s ambitious energy saving initiative targeting a 25% consumption reduction in 5 years,” said Inge Huijbrechts, VP Responsible Business.

The combined efforts of the hotels save an estimate of 22,400 KwH. This saving is equivalent to charging 8.5 million mobile phones or powering New York City for 13 seconds.

Across the world our hotels brought Earth Hour to life with innovative activities. The Park Inn by Radisson & Radisson Blu Hotel inRosa Khutor held a master class in the restaurant of how to cook dishes without using electric kitchen appliances. Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel Jersey inspired the senses with glow-in-the-dark cocktails, & an earthy 3 course menu for our climaterians* with an unplugged concert of one of its local bands. Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek, had a Luminous Glow colour foot print from the Elevator towards the white plain board where guests added their glow in the dark signature to express their support. Radisson Blu Resort, Gran Canaria switched off their lights and delighted their guests with a performance of fire dancers.

This year Earth Hour encouraged each participant to share their social feed and change their profile picture to express their support towards this movement. This proved to be a successful initiative. Earth Hour was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Since then it has grown to engage more than 172 countries and territories worldwide. Earth Hour 2016 was on 19 March 2016, 8:30 pm

* That a climatarian is a guest who combats climate change by favouring poultry, pork and sustainable fish, instead of CO2 culprits beef, lamb, venison, insists on unfrozen produce from sources close at hand to counter ref refutation and transport emissions, and uses 100% of every meal by processing skin, bones, vegetable offcuts etc.
