Less than a year since its establishment, Sierra Leone’s leading Hotel, Radisson Blu has identified an orphanage to sponsor; not just as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, but as a moral obligation to help Ebola orphans.
Yesterday, top management of the five star hotel donated assorted food items to St George’s Foundation at Grafton as a helping hand to feed over 35 orphans whose parents were killed by Ebola.
The Hotel’s General Manager Nuno Neves said the donation is more of a moral duty than a corporate social responsibility. “We feel committed to do this; we feel naturally responsible to help these kids,” he ascertained.
Radisson Blu’s Front Office Manager and Certified Trainer on Hotel Responsible Business, Edward Mensah explained that the donation is not going to be a one off event but a bi-annual one in which donations would be presented to the orphanage and planned activities would be executed at the orphanage after every 6 months. “It is our home now,” he stressed.
The Reservations Manager/Business Coordinator, Hassatu Serry said that the orphanage was not chosen at random, “St George’s Foundation met our criteria” she said, adding “everyone know how difficult it is (to survive) without your parent, therefore we want to support the children so that they know we are there for them,” she said.
Receiving the items, the Foundation’s Director Justina Conteh explained that when the organization initially started 11 years ago, it was meant as a platform to prepare street children who were abused, and trace their family members so as to be able to reunite them with their natural families.
However, she noted, “with the advent of Ebola, we opened our doors to take in Ebola survivors, and orphans who were not infected by the virus.”
She revealed that the foundation is faced with numerous challenges, one of which was food insufficiency. The timely intervention of Radisson Blu’s donation will help in cushioning the challenge she said.
Radisson Blu is one of the few institutions that has made huge donation to the orphanage and have also pledge their commitment in giving aid to the orphanage biannually.
